Manual D Duct Design
Duct Layouts Engineered for Airflow, Comfort & Code Compliance
At Elements Design Group, we offer Manual D duct design services that go beyond lines on a layout. Our designs are engineered for balanced airflow, quiet operation, and efficient performance—because ductwork is more than a connection; it’s the backbone of HVAC system comfort.
Every project we deliver is tailored using data from your Manual J calculation, sized using Manual D methodology, and formatted to meet permitting and installer requirements.
Whether you’re building a new home or revising plans to pass inspection, our Manual D HVAC designs are optimized for both code compliance and real-world installation.
What Is Manual D?
Manual D is the ACCA standard for residential ductwork design. It uses the results from your Manual J load calculation to determine proper duct sizing and layout—ensuring the air distribution system delivers the right airflow to each room.
A true Manual D calculation considers:
- Room-by-room airflow requirements (CFM)
- Duct length, material type, shape, and layout
- Friction loss, static pressure, and air velocity
- Fan performance curves and system efficiency
Our team designs to ACCA Manual D standards using professional-grade software like Wrightsoft. Every layout is reviewed by a licensed HVAC designer for accuracy and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Duct area is calculated using the formula for the shape (round or rectangular). For round ducts:
Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²
But in Manual D design, we base area on the airflow (CFM) required, then size ducts using friction rate, velocity, and static pressure loss to determine area and diameter.
We calculate equivalent duct diameter based on duct shape, material, and friction loss. This is especially useful when converting between rectangular and round ducts. It’s part of every detailed duct design we deliver.
The “2-foot rule” refers to a practical guideline where flexible ducts should have no more than 2 feet of excess length and should be pulled tight to minimize friction loss. While not part of ACCA standards, we account for installation constraints like this when creating designs.
